An outstanding location has become available at the head of the Havenstraat alongside the Wilhelminahaven docks in Schiedam. Jumbo Shipping, specialised in heavy lift water transport, and the Finnish company Wärtsilä, renowned for its marine engines and propellers, will be locating their head offices here. The development is in line with the local authority’s ambition to develop the pier area into a new urban district with homes and offices. The companies will be housed in two separate buildings above a shared parking level.
Both buildings share a common design vocabulary, focused on the views over the water. Large outdoor terraces are situated on several levels, and the volumes are rounded off by roof awnings that extend far out from the building to provide shading from the sun. The orientation of the buildings is attuned to the existing office building on the western side of the pier. An entrance square for the three buildings has been created at the head of the Havenstraat. In anticipation of the expected developments of the pier area, the deck above the car parking level is ready for public use. The light and open design of the complex reflects the maritime character of the surroundings, and this can also be strongly felt from the inside looking out.
