Bridge Westerdok
The aluminium pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Westerdok lock, realized between 1999 and 2003, predated the development of the Westerdok district. The bridge, 48 metres long and 5 metres wide, has two supports in the water. To achieve the desired 16-metre single leaf bascule, the bridge needed to be constructed of a light material. The openable section is pivoted and in the vertical position hangs just above the water level. The counterweight and the hydraulic pumps are concealed below the road deck. Two gently curved timber walls provide protection against ramming. When the bridge is open, the vertical section of road deck slots into these walls.
