Renovation office ASR
ASR is one of the most important insurers in the Netherlands, and has its head office in Utrecht. The building dates from 1974 and, with a total floor area of 84,000 m² (63,000 m² lettable floor area), it is one of the largest office buildings in the Netherlands. However, it no longer meets with the requirements of today’s companies in terms of sustainability, comfort or appearance. In 2010 ASR therefore decided to modernize its head office. For environmental reasons, it was deliberately decided not to construct a new building but to renovate the existing one.
A number of characteristic features of the original ASR building are retained in the design of the renovation, but much will also change. The brutalist concrete facade will be replaced. Large glass walls and recesses will bring daylight deep into the building, transforming it into a light and modern office with a transparent character that will be inviting for all employees and visitors.
The attractive garden in which the building is situated also dates from the 1970s, and is now mature. With the renovation this green character will now be continued throughout the building, with a ‘green carpet’ by the entrance, winter gardens, roof gardens and green walls. The winter gardens form a key element of an energy-saving concept that will not only create a healthy and pleasant working environment, but also an environmentally friendly building. Our ambition is to achieve a ‘BREEAM excellent’ rating.
The building’s characteristic large office floors will be redesigned to give a high level of flexibility to allow ‘New Generation Working’ (with 2,800 flexible workspaces for 4,000 employees). Within this design a wide variety of working and meeting areas will be available, so that everyone can find a pleasant place to work or meet.
The building will remain in use during the renovation, and the project will be completed in 2015.
